Protect your computer

If you are constantly connected to the internet, which most of us are now-a-days through DSL or CABLE, then you run the risk of being attacked by a hacker or malicious hacker software.  This is how most identity thefts through the internet are being performed: this is called port scanning.  This software looks through the internet for unprotected ports on your computers and then puts software on that computer which monitors and logs every key stroke you make and every web site that you go to. This software then sends the stolen information back to the hacker and, presto, he has your bank branch and account login information.

You can protect your self by adding a firewall device between the internet and your computer or your network. This will monitor and block any attacks on your network.

Also, you will want to have antivirus and internet security on all of your computers.  In addition it is critical to have a good anti-spyware program on all of your computers.

Hackers, virus creators, and spyware writers come out with new stuff on a daily basis.  Your anti-virus and anti-spyware software does not know what to look for unless its definition database is updated with the new threats.  That’s why it’s important to make sure that your software is updating on a daily basis or that you perform these updates manually periodically.

Also, it is critical to do windows updates as often as possible to keep your operating system up to date.  In addition, your applications need to be updated so that they run smoothly and so that you are maximizing the abilities of the software.
